(Lavendula Officinalis)
lavender, which is also known as Elf Leaf is a perennial member of the large mint family and its stems, growing 1-2 feet high, are grey-green and angular with a flaky bark. Its flowers, which are lilac coloured and tubular in shape, usually bloom between July and September.
Lavender has a long history of medicinal use and its medicinal qualities come from its essential oil which is extracted from the leaves and flowers. Internally lavender is believed to be of benefit for a multitude of problems including stress, anxiety, exhaustion, irritability, headaches, migraines, insomnia, depression, colds, digestion, flatulence, upset stomach, liver and gall problems, nervousness, loss of appetite and as a breath freshener and mouthwash. Externally lavender oil is one of the safest essential oils and can be used full strength on the skin. It works wanders for cuts, scrapes, wounds, burns, bee, wasp and insect stings, rashes, muscle aches, rheumatism, arthritis, cold sores, canker sores, blisters, bruises, athlete’s foot and rubbed directly into the temples in the case of headaches or migraines.
Lavender has long been believed to have magical powers. In spell work it can be used for love and as well as that protection, quiet sleep, long life, purification, peace and happiness, wishes, visions, attracting men, clarity of thoughts, childbirth and healing. For love, peace and good health place lavender flowers in a sachet to be carried on the person and the fresh flowers can also be rubbed on clothing to attract love. For sleep divination place sprigs of lavender under your pillow while thinking about your desire. If you do dream about anything related, you will get what you desire. The scent of lavender is said to be a big turn on for men and lavender oil and water was worn by prostitutes in the past to both advertise their profession as well as to attract (through magic) customers.
